点评:The staff here are passionate about the story of the Donaghmore Workhouse and about keeping alive remembrance of those people who passed through workhouse doors and the nature of the times that forced them there. While this is a very local experience it is explained in the wider context of the times, and with excellent research and historic accuracy, while also highlighting individual stories in illustration.
The buildings here are huge, but as a museum is only funded locally. Re-creation of the governor’s rooms is well done. The sparseness of other workhouse areas actually highlights how forbidding the place must have been to its inmates, especially the children.
Sean has excellent knowledge and did a great job as guide, was happy to discuss any questions asked. There is a large display of C19th agricultural equipment as well, which staff can also take you through if interested.
Both Sean and Trevor were very kind when I left an item behind there - nothing was too much trouble.
I highly recommend this experience - it’s a real surprise. The entry fee costs hardly anything, and although no donation is asked for ever, given the upkeep task of the buildings I’m sure it would be well received. If you’re going through Co Laois, please visit!
