点评:If like us, you are doing a NSW coastal road trip, it’s worth a detour to see the Clarence River at some point.
It’s the largest river on the eastern coast with over 100 islands. It winds its way south through Grafton and Maclean and on to Yamba and is so big that early explorers wrongly thought it must lead to an ‘inland sea’ and spent years chasing this myth.
We pulled off the Pacific Highway at Yamba where the river mouth meets the Pacific Ocean.
The most scenic point is from the lookout at the top of Clarence Head, where the two lighthouses stand. From here, you look down over the river mouth, Turners Beach and the rocky break-water walls.
There’s also a brightly coloured red and yellow information board that provides the indigenous Goorie story of the giant eel and the creation of the Clarence. This is stop #7 on the Aboriginal Tourist Drive which has 13 stops around the Maclean and Yamba areas.
