Birding (Quetzals) without further excursion!

点评：It’s a long drive after arrival in San Jose, and if you’ve not driven in Costa Rica before, it’s recommended that you hire a service to get you there. An hour getting out of San Jose is not unusual which, having arrived on the 1315 flight eats into daylight before it gets dark at 1745. Account for time at the rental car desk and grabbing a bite to eat before hitting the road and soon it’s dark.
2.75 hours from SJO and you turn onto a winding road that is 10km but will take you 30 minutes to travel.
First morning, we spotted several different species of hummingbirds and both male and female Quetzals on the grounds. Trogons, warblers, and woodpeckers. There are birds everywhere. We had considered hiring a birding guide but it’s honestly not necessary if you’re here in the late spring.
The food at their restaurant is outstanding. Service staff are top tier. Dress for cooler weather here. I had to purchase a sweatshirt in their gift shop because I underestimated the cool of the Cloud Forest.
This lodge was worth the drive. If you’re into birds, this is truly one of best places I’ve visited for birding in Central America.
