点评:Originally established in the 12th century, the Monastery of St Vincent Outside the Walls is one of the most important monasteries in Portugal. Founded by the first Portuguese King, Afonso I, the monastery was reconstructed in the 16th century and it was during the 17th and 18th centuries that the rich interior decoration, namely the glazed tiles and the beautiful paintings, was added. Today the monastery is a property of the state and it serves as the administrative centre for the Patriarch of Lisbon.
Some of the highlights of the monastery are the cistern, which is around 900 years old, the 16th-century church, which is a prime example of the Mannerist style, the beautiful cloisters, and the stunning entrance hall, which contains glazed tiles depicting the reconquest of the Iberian peninsula, the founding of the monastery and other historical episodes. Other parts worth exploring are the sacristy, which is filled with coloured inlaid marble tiles, and the chapel of St Anthony.
It's worth noting that the monastery is also the site of the Royal Pantheon of the Braganza dynasty, which ruled Portugal for nearly three centuries. However, my favourite part of the monastery was the series of 38 panels illustrating fables by the French writer Jean de La Fontaine. I also really enjoyed the great views of Lisbon from the church tower.
Last, but not least, I would like to note that as part of your visit, you can also explore permanent exhibitions about the Lisbon church and the archaeological artefacts found near the monastery.
Standard tickets cost €8 and there's a €2 discount for holders of the Lisboa card. As you could easily spend an hour and a half in the monastery, I think this is very good value for money and I would suggest you set aside some time to explore this site.
