VROOOOOOM! Bring your best geek self and be awed at the skill, the beauty, the variety, and yes, the weirdness
National Championship Air Races的点评
点评:I have been coming to the air races since 1995 and I do love them. HOWEVER, I will put out there that this could be a tough event for a casual tourist. Unless you are curious about race planes and/or aviation history, the fickle desert weather, the high prices, and the noise are going to be off-putting. Couple that with the very real peril that exists at these events, and you may wind up not enjoying yourself at all.
Having said that, if you are open-minded and perhaps a latent gearhead, consider that you will be face-to-face with aircraft that are unique in the whole world; you will see and hear these aircraft fly; you will observe pilots who are skilled and passionate about their calling; you will mingle with race fans who are proud to let their geek flags fly.
If you have kids who have their eyes on the skies, this is a great place to connect with educational and training resources in the form of aviation schools and companies. The Civil Air Patrol is also here. NASA is often here. There is a Drone Zone/STEM area that is all about cultivating aviation interest in kids and young people.
The air races almost always include amazing aerobatics performances and military demos. This year, for instance, there were demos by the FA-18 and F-22 military exhibition teams. The air races also host the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels from time to time. One year, John Travolta flew his private 747 jet by the field.
The races begin on the Wednesday; this is also the day with the lowest prices. The admission prices ramp up through the week, with the highest prices on Sunday. There is a separate admission fee for "The Pits," which is where you can see the WWII-era modified race planes, T-6s, sport class, Formula One class, and biplanes; this is where they "park" between races. The Pits also have deluxe displays by custom aircraft manufacturers, high-performance aviation accessories and aids (optics, headsets, helmets, avionics, etc.) and usually a very high-end wristwatch/chronometer maker.
Included in regular admission are pit/"parking" areas for STOL (short take-off and landing) drag race planes, jet racers. There is the National Aviation Heritage Invitational display, where race attendees (including YOU) can vote on their favorite plane among a wide assortment of gleaming, restored historic planes. For instance, this year there was a Vietnam era combat Cessna. Can you believe it? A FIGHTER CESSNA! Who knew.
Finally, the various branches of the services are here promoting themselves.
If you can meet this subculture half-way, you will come away amazed and delighted.
