点评:We visited here on our way home from Chester. The castle is easy to find following the brown signs but take care after passing the main gates as the road gets very narrow. We encountered a small native in a very large 4x4 who clearly didn’t like visitors going up there.
After entering the gates, the drive to the car park takes a while through some lovely scenery. Plenty of parking and the reception is right next to it. The walk up to the castle is quite steep so be warned although a mini bus operates a shuttle service.
Since the castle hadn’t yet opened we visited the gardens which are absolutely stunning. The views across the Shropshire countryside are amazing. The castle by comparison isn’t exactly mind blowing. It is nice, but there are a few rooms empty of furniture leaving you to simply look out of the window, we also found the staff not as engaging as other NT properties we have visited. Usually they are full of information and very eager to share but it seemed here that the most enthusiastic person was the guy at the front door.
The cafe is up to NT standards and there is the usual shop and bookshop. The drive leaving the car park is just as good as the one going in.
