View castle from a scenic boat trip

点评：Rumkale is a castle from the 11th century on the site of a Roman development. The castle is under renovation and landing to visit was not possible when we were there. The site on a promontory in the River Euphrates is now in a large lake following the damming of the river as part of the Southeast Anatolian Irrigation Project, which is fundamental for agriculture in this region, particularly cotton production.
Boat tours on the lake take in riverside villages, some of which are partly submerged. The scenery is spectacular. Tickets can be bought at the dock. The boat trip was about 3 hours including a stop to explore the village of Halfeti
Surfaced roads lead all the way to the site near Beğendik. Public transport to the site is challenging from Şanlırfa or Gaziantep, but driving is easy and tours can be easily obtained in either city. Large car park with a walk down to the dock.
There is also a glass platform on a cliff to overlook the lake and castle. Small entrance fee.
