点评:This is the only place in Canada apparently to see prairie dogs. This park hosts their northernmost habitat. The Top Dogtown Trail at the beginning of the Ecotour road and also the Larson colony near the end host prairie dog metropolises, i.e. a lot of black-tailed prairie dogs, you can spend a lot of time admiring their cuteness! You can observe their behaviour such as kissing to identify their family group.
There are a lot of bison in the park, but at the time of our visit, we only saw one just behind the Larson homestead.
The Ecotour road, the road to 70 Mile Butte, and the road to the East Block are unpaved and our tire got flat as we hit a tiny, sharp metallic object (apparently electrical equipment fragment) along the Ecotour road. Well that sucks. Thankfully the Val Marie visitor centre helped us greatly and Glen, the local mechanic, helped us get back on the road and complete our Prairie trip safely!
The Eagle Butte and 70 Mile Butte Trails are apparently great for sunset views and boy, the lady at the visitor centre did not disappoint! The sunset was epic! Then immediately after that, as we exited the park gate of 70 mile Butte trail, we heard packs of coyotes howling. That scared my family but I found it interesting!
Unfortunately we didn't get to stay during total darkness as we stayed in a hotel at Swift Current. Apparently this is the darkest dark sky preserve in Canada, so I guess that is a perfect place to see the Milky way and northern lights! Also the drive to Swift Current was definitely a struggle. Plenty of deer on the side and possibly crossing out of the blue, and owls living their "thug life" standing in the middle of the road! Would not recommend driving along Highway 4 during nighttime!
The East Block has a paved drive, the Badlands Parkway. It is one-lane road with pullouts. There are a lot of blind spots there and in some pullouts we can't see ahead. So, one time, we encountered a car and we had to reverse back to the nearest pullout, a significant distance away. That was unfortunate. But the views from each of the viewpoints were gorgeous! Especially the last two, Mauvais Terres and Ta Sunka Watogla.
So essentially, this represents what a true prairie is. The skies here are particularly bigger and different from the rest of the country. This hosts the last true, undisturbed grassland of Canada. The big buttes and the badlands of this park show that Saskatchewan is neither flat nor boring, and you won't see your dog run away to the horizon for 3 days.
I wish people would divert off Trans-Canada to see the true beauty of Saskatchewan.
