A Perfect Anniversary Side Trip Fly Fishing

点评：My wife and I recently traveled to Antigua to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. While she enjoyed a relaxing spa day, I took the opportunity to fulfill a longtime fly-fishing dream and chase bonefish on the flats.
About three months before our trip, I contacted Nick Williams of Antigua Fly Fishing. After several emails discussing what to expect, I booked a guided trip. For some background, I’m an avid freshwater fly fisherman but had never fished for bonefish. Nick encouraged me to purchase a suitable rod and reel and spend some time practicing my casting before the trip. Looking back, I probably should have practiced even more!
After a short boat ride, Nick had me spend some time casting so he could get a feel for my abilities and offer a few pointers. Before long, he spotted a large area of nervous, cloudy water and put me in position. Shortly afterward, I hooked my first-ever bonefish—and what a thrill it was. The fish tore deep into my backing twice before we finally brought it alongside the boat. Over the next couple of hours, we repeated that experience several more times, landing plenty of bonefish, including a few over 20 inches.
With the bonefish bite slowing down, we switched gears and went looking for tarpon. It didn’t take Nick long to find them. Unfortunately, I then focused on doing everything possible not to catch one! We had dozens of sightings with four legitimate opportunities where the fish ate but failed to convert any of them. That was entirely on me, not the guide.
The fishing was excellent, the scenery was beautiful, and Antigua itself was a wonderful destination. In fact, most of our discussions on the flight home centered around planning a return trip.
Nick was knowledgeable, professional, patient, and genuinely enjoyable to spend the day with. He answered my endless questions, offered helpful casting advice throughout the day, and worked hard to put me on fish. The trip was reasonably priced and exceeded my expectations.
If you’re considering fly fishing in Antigua, I highly recommend booking a day with Nick and Antigua Fly Fishing. I’ll definitely be back.
