点评:I can remember when Copped Hall mansion was a burnt-out shell and nature had reclaimed it. I have visited a few times since The Copped Hall Trust has taken ownership of the building and each time there has been something new to see regarding the restoration work. This visit was a guided tour and the guide was friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the house. The present house was built in 1753 for the Conyers family. The house was last owned by the Wythes family and it caught fire in May 1917, where it remained a shell for the best part of 75 years. The tour of the house completed and then you can stop for a rest and to sample the delicious homemade cakes on offer in the Racquets Court building, which is Grade II Listed. The coffee is instant, so don’t expect lattes or any of that nonsense! The tour resumes with a guided walk through the four acre walled garden. The volunteers have worked so hard here and many of the beds now contain fruit bushes and trees. There is a lovely round lily pond and benches surrounding it. It is a lovely spot to sit and watch the dragonflies skimming across the pond area and just enjoy the tranquility of the garden. Some lovely herbaceous borders, well stocked with lots of perennials, roses and summer annuals dotted in between, reminiscent of some of the famous gardens of UK. All the glasshouses are still yet to be fully restored, but a couple of them are. Plants for sale too and much cheaper than garden centre prices, although for obvious reasons limited choice.
I would recommend both the guided tour and one of their open days. On the open days access to the mansion is without a tour guide and you can walk around at your leisure. Prices are on their website, but if booked in advance, you get £2 off the price on the gate.
Favourite parts were the old stables and the walled garden.
I have since become a Friend of Copped Hall and am now looking forward to more visits.
