点评:RAF Fighter Command was created and moved into Bentley Priory in July 1936 and the RAF finally moved out in 2008. The story of that historic period, including its central significance to WW2, is told brilliantly in the Bentley Priory Museum which opened in 2013. In addition, there is the above ground part of the bunker, used during the war but also in the subsequent Cold War, as well as the spectacular Queen Adelaide Room. The Dowager Queen rented the Priory for the last three years of her life but only lived there for the last year (1848-1849). (Adelaide in South Australia was named after her.)
Given the museum's historic significance and its size, it is hardly a hidden gem but it deserves to be much better known. It is very accessible, being just off the M1 south of the M25. Any millionaires who are interested in WW2 could do much worse than living in the well-appointed mansions/apartments in the grounds.
