点评:... and a 'bat cave' and most importantly an AWESOME cave! There are a trio of 'Cathedral Caves' formations south of Rock Sound on the west side of Shermans Highway, now dubbed locally with the informal names of 'Notre Dame' (formerly 'Spider Cave' or 'Cathedral Cave') and 'St. Peter's Basilica' and 'Westminster Abbey'. Visitors arriving by ground vehicle can find this cave complex by watching for a large hand-painted sign along the Highway approx. 1 kilometer south of Rock Sound, which marks the entrance to the jungle property that also encompasses an ocean-connected blue hole named 'Boiling Hole'. My family & I parked directly across Shermans Highway on the property of the Allen Chapel AME Church, then carefully crossed the Highway to access the Boiling Hole/Cathedral Caves site.
The access trail is uneven & rocky with some short stretches of wood handrails/access barriers, first passing Boiling Hole (bonus photo op) then heading uphill to the entrance point for the three Cathedral Caves. There is a relatively new construction of wooden ladders (aka, 'stairs') and an intermediate platform allowing visitors able to descend & climb on foot to explore the cave complex. Someone also added hand-painted signage depicting the three caves to orient explorers for greater enjoyment of this natural wonder. Best I could tell from matching the graphics on the sign to the cave structures, the central 'St. Peter's Basilica' formation is the above ground connecting feature between the two much larger caves which each offer underground spaces & passageways to navigate. Accessing the remote features of 'Westminster Abbey' presents the greatest physical challenge, with low ceilings & narrow passages & loose rocks in many spots; but the careful stepping & crouching are worth the underground views. 'Notre Dame' is a much larger formation, easier to work your way through & with more obvious wildlife to see (LOTS of spider webs with an occasional spider, and a ceiling roost of small bats that may be flying depending on the time of day).
My family of 4 adults are all very happy we took the time during our one-week stay to visit the Cathedral Caves. We would recommend it as a day trip destination for adults & children who have the mobility and the curiosity to enjoy the beauty of this gift of nature on Eleuthera Island.
