Our ferry to Shetland departure time on Friday got moved 6hrs earlier to account for the storm (which I didn't mind), but it did mean I had to set off driving at 4am!! 6hr 30 later I arrive in Aberdeen for gates to open and see they have sent a text 1hr before the gates opening time saying they have cancelled the ferry!! As if people haven't just travelled across half the country to get there. After discussing with some very uninterested staff, our options were to stay in the cabin we had booked for free over night, but we had to PAY FOR OUR OWN TEA! But we'd have to leave the boat at 8am Saturday morning because they gave our cabin to someone else on the Saturday. To make matters worse, I needed a pet friendly cabin (which is exactly the same as a normal cabin, but with a wipe-down floor instead of carpet) and there are only 8 pet cabins on the whole ship. So our only options if we still wanted to get to Shetland was put the dog in the on-board kennels, which btw are disgusting and boarding on animal cruelty as they keep them locked in a cage with no food or water and no exercise for the full ferry crossing, and we'd have to sleep on the floor of the ship for 12hrs. Or if we wanted to stay with our dog we'd have to sit outside on deck in the middle of January for 12hrs. Disgusting treatment of people and animals.
The fact that in 2025 they are so against dog owners that they would rather us sit outside on the deck of a ship rather than give us a room is absolutely disgusting. Additionally, Northlink are no strangers to stormy seas, so to have zero backup plans for when ferries get cancelled is beyond a joke. I booked a full week off work for this and had to drive all the way home the next day after being kicked off the ferry at 8am to prepare it for the next departure. Requested a full refund and certainly will never use Northlink Ferries again.
