点评:I visited Heaven Hill and took part in the Bourbon Experience. Initially, I was impressed by the facilities and the friendly greeting at the front desk. Our group of three prepared for the tour and met our guide, Scott, who appeared somewhat disheveled. He handed us lanyards with small tasting glasses attached, which was a neat touch. We were a bit unsure about Scott’s stability, but assumed his behavior might be part of an act. Outside, as a group, we listened to Scott share odd stories about walking five miles home after a bad date and anecdotes about his cat. His presentation was filled with long pauses and incoherent ramblings.
When we reached the rickhouse, Scott realized he’d forgotten the keys, leaving the group in disbelief while he ran back to retrieve them. Once inside, the tour consisted mostly of a casual walk through the rickhouse. Scott mentioned it had been destroyed by a fire in 1996, but also claimed it was built decades earlier, leaving us confused. At this point, disappointment set in. We received little to no information about the distillery’s history or the unique features of the bottles we tasted. Instead, Scott continued with strange and unprofessional stories, such as his previous job at Panda Express, and more about his cat. At each station, we watched him take large swigs of bourbon directly from the bottle, sometimes even two shots.
The tour felt like a disaster and a disappointing waste of our limited time in Kentucky. It was disheartening that Heaven Hill would place someone like Scott in a public-facing role without oversight or evaluation. Unfortunately, we left with little insight into Heaven Hill itself and a sense of shared disappointment among the group.
