We travelled on the Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town (8–10 September) to celebrate my husband’s retirement—a once-in-a-lifetime journey we hoped would reflect the luxury and refinement the Blue Train is known for. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations.
Service Failures:
• Our assigned butleress was unresponsive and failed to return after her initial visit. We had to seek assistance from another staff member.
• Communication throughout the journey was vague, inconsistent, and often inaccurate.
Operational Disruptions:
• Departure was delayed by 1.5 hours with no clear explanation.
• The cabin ran out of water and had no Wi-Fi.
• A 4-hour unscheduled stop occurred due to technical issues.
• The train stopped overnight in a poorly lit, unsafe area.
• The Kimberley stop was replaced with Bloemfontein without prior notice.
• The cabin’s air conditioning malfunctioned, making the environment uncomfortably hot.
• Arrival was nearly 7 hours late—revised multiple times from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
Experience Impact:
• The final six hours of the journey were spent in darkness, robbing us of the iconic Table Mountain view and the scenic conclusion we had anticipated.
We submitted a formal complaint. As of today—over six weeks since the journey—we have received only that they were waiting a response.
This was meant to be a premium, celebratory experience. Instead, it was uncomfortable, poorly managed, and deeply disappointing. We expected better from a brand that markets itself as a five-star hotel on rails.
