点评:We attended the Rochester Opera House (ROH) wonderful production of Fiddler on the Roof. The cast was amazing -- great voices and good pacing. Very affordable (@$22.50). Acoustics were excellent!
The venue is an oldie but goodie total classic! Fabulous, old theater located on the 2nd and 3rd level of the Rochester City Hall building. The Opera House was designed by George Gilman Adams and opened in 1908. The design included a unique movable floor: the floor can be raised to a slope for amphitheater seating or flat for dancing! In the late 1990's, the ROH was restored and placed on the Register of Historic Places.
The hourshoe shaped balcony level side seats slope down toward the stage. They were roped off for this performance but looked really interesting.
The theater is two levels: Orchestra (2nd floor) and balcony (3rd floor). Old wooden seats, but we were given cushions which made a big difference. On the orchestra level was a small refreshment stand that sold drinks and snacks before the show and at intermission.
The 3 hour performance was over before we knew it!
Also, plenty of free parking.
Words of caution: no bathroom facilities in the balcony. And though there is an elevator to the balcony there are no railings and the stairs are a tad treaterous, so avoid the balcony if you have any mobility issues. I was told there are accessible seats in the back of the orchestra section.
Well worth the trip for both the performance AND a chance to really experience this historic venue!
