An excellent private introduction to Wachau wine

点评：My wife and I booked a private tour and tasting at Domäne Wachau, and it was one of the highlights of our time in the Wachau Valley.
Our guide, Lena, a young associate originally from Innsbruck, was fantastic. She was warm, bright, energetic, and clearly enthusiastic about both wine and the work being done at Domäne Wachau. Her enthusiasm made the experience feel personal and engaging rather than like a scripted winery tour.
We received a thorough introduction to the property and learned about Domäne Wachau’s cooperative structure, the growers who contribute to it, the vineyards and grape varieties of the region, and some of the winery’s accomplishments and awards.
One of the most interesting parts was going underground into the cellar and production facilities. We were able to see both the historic portions of the cellar and the newer areas used for modern winemaking and production, which provided a fascinating look at how the winery balances its history with contemporary operations.
The tasting afterward was particularly well done. Rather than simply pouring a predetermined flight, Lena used our conversation and what she had learned about our individual wine preferences to tailor the tasting to us. That made the experience considerably more interesting and gave us a much better introduction to Austrian wine.
Overall, this was an excellent private experience and worth every penny. Lena was a wonderful ambassador for Domäne Wachau and for Austrian wine generally. For anyone visiting the Wachau who wants something more substantive and personal than simply stopping in for a tasting, I would highly recommend booking the private tour.
