点评:We went here not quite knowing what to expect with it being free! Honestly, it was good! We took our nearly 12 year old grandson and although he skimmed past some things he said he enjoyed it. There are friendly and knowledgeable volunteers everywhere who will show and explain things. The man in the lamp room…sorry didn’t get his name….was especially good as he took us through a sort of mocked up tunnel/coal face structure which wasn’t highlighted anywhere but which a volunteer in the engine house had mentioned. The gentleman was a mine of information…😂…and really knew his stuff. If you do visit, ask about the tunnels. There are hidden steps up to the base of the huge pit head winding gear which he told us about!
There’s a little train you can ride which is what the miners used to be taken to the coal face on. £3 each and well worth it as it helps with the upkeep of this historic site.
The pit head winding gear is enormous and very impressive. My grandson had no idea what it was when he first saw it. The engine house is massive and similarly impressive and apparently on the last Sunday of every month, they fire the gigantic engine up. Considering going back to see that!
There’s a small, mining related gift shop and a refreshments tent but I don’t know what was on the menu as we didn’t use it.
The museum is open 1pm to 5pm, Tuesday, Thursday and weekends, easily found with plenty of parking.
For engineers, steam enthusiasts and folks interested in mining history, this place is a must. We’re none of these but we still enjoyed it!
