点评:Overall we had a good experience at Tabin.
There are both river and hill lodges available. the river lodges are on a flat walkway along the small river onsite. The hill lodges are further down the walkway, up a few sets of stairs and overlook a small pool that the river flows into. We ended up in one of the hill lodges. I read a lot of reviews calling the rooms "basic". No it is not a Hilton, the lodge is in the middle of the forest, I am not sure what some travellers expect but in my opinion the rooms were nice - comfortable and clean. WiFi is available in the dining/common area but not in the rooms however we had cell signal (albeit not great) in our room.
The food was served buffet style and had a decent amount of variety. For vegetarian meals they will bring you a separate dish of some sauteed veggies and seitan. While it was not bad it was kind of repetitive as it was prepared exactly the same for each meal. However there are were also some vegetarian options in the main buffet (sauteed veggies. noodles, rice) so I felt there was enough variety. Coffee, tea, water, juice (for breakfast) are free. Soda, alcoholic drinks (and coffee from the espresso machine after breakfast) are available for additional cost.
The activities were hit or miss in my opinion but you can't control what wildlife will be out and any tour like this requires a bit of luck. We stayed 4D, 3N and felt it was the right amount of time. Days started off with a morning hike on the trails near the lodge followed by breakfast then a late morning drive or activity. There was a long break in the middle of the day for lunch/leisure time.. In the late afternoon there was another activity or drive followed by dinner and then a night walk or drive.
On the hikes around the lodge we saw gibbons and some birds but not really a whole lot of wildlife. On the daytime drives we saw lots of eagles, some hornbills and a few other types of birds but many were far/hard to see so binoculars were a must. We also saw macaques and some squirrels. The drives in the dark in my opinion were much better as we saw several kinds of civets, leopard cats, flying squirrels, a porcupine, eagles, etc. The drives are all up and down the same road which is the road used to access the lodge from Lahud Datu and is bordered by forest on one side and palm plantation on the other. Some in our group were frustrated that the drives were all on the same road but most of the mammal sightings were on the side of the palm plantation so I would guess the reasoning is it is easier to spot animals.
Other activities outside of the hikes and drives included a hike to the Mud Volcano, hike to /swim in a waterfall, trip to the Visitor Center and a mud mask/foot soak.
The waterfall swim was a highlight. We were lucky enough to see a family of otters swimming in the pool when we arrived. It was nice and refreshing to take a swim after hiking in the heat.
The foot soak was a little random I felt but it was nice after all the walking and I liked that we were able to try the mud from the volcano as a skin mask.
The Mud Volcano hike I could have done without. I know it is one of the major marketing points for Tabin but I was underwhelmed. It was a 30 min hot hike to the volcano which was hardly bubbling and had no wildlife. You could see the footprints of animals. I am not sure if there are ever wildlife sightings there but I got the impression that there are not.
The biggest thing I did not care for was the Visitor Center and a lot of it was the timing. I am not sure if it was due to the timing of the arrival of everyone in our group but we went to the Visitor Center on the afternoon of our 3rd day which was the day before we were due to leave. It felt like an activity that should have been done first thing since it talks a lot about what to expect at the lodge and the wildlife so it felt kind of weird after we had basically done all the activities and completed our stay. We were also shown a video that I don't think there was any point to show and it was a waste of time in my opinion. It was basically a marketing video with people talking about how great the lodge is to entice people to visit - well were already there so I don't know why we need to watch a video meant to sell us on visiting.
The highlight of our trip was a visit to Orangutan Corner which apparently is not something that is done very often. This is the location were orangutans are released after rehabilitation at the Sepilok center. We were able to have a very close experience with a mother and baby orangutan here and it was the only spotting on our trip so it was very exciting for us. Additionally, I appreciated the guide talking about the rehab process at Sepilok and how they determine whether the orangutan can be released and how they monitor to determine their success in the wild. This is the kind of information I wish the visitor center had because it was very interesting to learn about.
Overall we had a good stay, we had some nice sightings, food was good, room was nice, guides were good, activities were hit or miss but for us it was worth visiting.
