Hidden gem for seeing kiwis and native wildlife

点评：We visited the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House on a rainy day and were lucky the weather cleared while we were there, as much of the park is outdoors. Since the main bird dome was under construction, the staff kindly offered half-price tickets, which we really appreciated.
The highlight was seeing two kiwis in their natural darkened habitat—staff were on hand to help spot them if you couldn’t find them right away. Beyond the kiwis, there are many other fascinating native New Zealand species, making it a great stop if you don’t get to see them in the wild.
What makes the experience even better is that the entrance fee supports kiwi conservation, helping to protect this endangered species. Overall, it feels like a hidden gem that’s absolutely worth a visit if you’re road tripping through New Zealand. It’s also easy to combine with a trip to Hobbiton, as it’s only about an hour’s drive away.
