点评:We walked again through tall trees to Bessho Jinja. The path started off well enough but soon became an exhausting climb up a steep ramp. Terminating, predictably, in yet another set of stone stairs.
At the top we found a gravel plaza with a big building off to the right, the Kaguraden Hall. It is set up to be some sort of stage and apparently still hosts musical events. The front wall is entirely open, the end walls closed, but the far long wall is carefully opened nearly the full width of the building and height of the wall to frame a view of the mountains and Shiodadaira. With insensitivity to detail, someone has placed three wires across that view, though by a change of position we are able to get the wires out of a photo.
There is signage in Japanese, with a photo, that seems to suggest the sun rises over the most important peak on the vernal equinox or some such, and quite possibly this open hall is used for a great ceremony at that time.
There is a pretty standard jinja with enclosed holiest of holies, which we circumambulated photoing. It is valued as a cultural asset because it retains its original form.
Finally we declared ourselves finished here. Then we saw a couple we had been running into at each temple today; they were descending from the woods above. Looking up we saw yet more buildings. Up we went. It turned out to be two small shrines and some memorial gravestones. This section of the compound seemed to have been neglected and was very overgrown and difficult to navigate safely.
