点评：Was I expecting this not too far from the Hume Freeway... certainly not. The town of Eldorado is a place of transcendent beauty. The town is only about 20 kilometres from Wangaratta and I had never visited it... I lived in Wangaratta about twenty years ago... seems it was an oversight on my behalf.
As you are driving in you will see a sign that tells you there is a dredge. I have seen dredges before many times but curiosity caught me and I had to follow the road in to see what was there, and why!
The dredge operated for 18 years and ran 24 hours a day, except when it shut down on Thursday and Sunday for maintenance. Its most productive days had a team of nine men aboard working a shift. The noise of this dredge could be heard over ten kilometres away. Working conditions on board were a bit archaic and therefore unsafe... the environment was noisy and they worked closely with moving parts of the machinery. No deaths or serious injuries were ever recorded on this dredge. Although crewman Ted Feely was drowned when an earthen bank collapsed on his boat as he was greasing the bucket band.
There are information boards and maps at the site that are really fascinating. This remains the only gold dredge that remains intact in the country. You are even able to board it carefully when you are at the site. I found the levers fascinating as they are the same technology used by the railways in stabling yards. Further you can take a historic walk at the site... the walk is only 750 metres, but the ground is very uneven and would not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues.
