点评:Perhaps the one thing I wanted to see above all else whilst I was in Winchester (not knowing about the wonderful Hospital of St Cross when I decided this) was the Statue of King Alfred the Great.
As synonymous with Winchester as Robin Hood is with Nottingham, King Alfred the Great is immortalised in this statue, designed and commissioned in1899 for two reasons - in part because 1899 represented 1000 years since his death, but perhaps more importantly because Alfred very much rebuilt Winchester after the Dark Ages, and made it the Capital of his Kingdom of Wessex.
It is a huge 5 meter tall bronze likeness of the King (at least to Victorian eyes) atop a massive stone plinth. It stands at the end of thr main high road through Winchester, close to the crossing of the River Itchen. Traffic goes around it daily and it must surely catch the eye of even the local motorists who are used to seeing it on a daily basis.
Inscribed on the bottom is the text: 'Aelfred, To the Founder of the Kingdom and Nation'.
Whilst from a historical point of view this might be somewhat inaccurate (Alfred found neither Wessex or England - they were founded by Cerdic and Æthelstan respectively) it is undeniable that Alfred, through his lawmaking and distribution of literacy throughout the realm(s), along with his victory-against-all-odds against the Great Heathen Army, is the very embodiment of an England that it was once acceptable to be proud of, and so I can see why, along with the aforementioned links to the city, this huge statue dominates this place, and why the inscribed text, incorrect as it may be, is there.
I'm delighted I got to see this statue. It's a mighty piece and one I would advise everyone to see at some point in their lives.
