点评：Thursday, 09th April 2026. visit to the Midland Air Museum, where I was lucky enough to enjoy a guided cockpit tour in their Avro Vulcan example XL360. This was my second cockpit tour, having had the privilege of a tour of Newark Air Museums Avro Vulcan B.2 XM594 in 2024 by ex-Vulcan pilot Bill Ramsey, but this time my phone did not die, so I got the video inside. This was my first visit to this wonderful Museum, which had been recommended to me by a volunteer I met last year at Wroughton Science Museum storage facility near Swindon, as we lamented our failure to see the Lockheed Constellation that they have in storage there. As the site details, there is an incredible variety of designs produced by the British aircraft industry in the 1950s and 1960s represented at the Museum – from carrier-borne types such as the Hawker Sea Hawk, de Havilland Sea Vixen, Fairey Gannet and Sea Harrier to RAF fighters such as the Vampire, Meteor, Hunter, Javelin and Lightning. The jet bomber force is represented too, most notably by the English Electric Canberra. There were also several military trainers, including the American Lockheed T-33, the Polish PZL Iskra and the British Vampire T.11. There is a dedicated section detailing the development of the jet engine by local lad Frank Whittle, as well as interior models and exhibits about the area's aviation history. As ever, the volunteers are a real asset and with the site is complemented with a nice little café and shop area, including an extensive range of models and second-hand books to purchase, this museum is a real treasure.
