点评:We visited Octavia Hill’s House by chance after discovering it is just over the river from a National Trust property, Peckover House, in Wisbech. What a little gem! The house is 350 years old and of interest in itself, but it is also full of surprises.
As well as telling the story of Octavia Hill’s amazing work as a social reformer - she also co-founded the National Trust and pioneered the formation of the Army Cadet Force - there are rooms dedicated to these other activities. She also worked with John Ruskin and there is a room celebrating him. In the cellars there is a mock-up of how many people used to live and how awful housing was back in the day, ‘the slums of hell!’ There is a pleasant garden and a café, though this was not open when we visited. The entrance fee is negligible and further reduced if you are a National Trust member. Check on the open days and hours before just turning up, we were lucky it was open. The custodians were friendly.
