Unforgettable Private Cigar Tour at Zemis

点评：My partner is a cigar enthusiast and we were really looking forward to visiting the DR for their cigar tours. We were recommended to Zemis by a local as she cited the experience was much more personal than the classic “industrial” tour and that the CEO, Sylvin, was worth meeting.
We took an Uber from Santiago, but it’s possible to take public transportation close to the farms and just walk from there. Seems like we are visiting in the off season (late October) so our tour was private. In total the tour plus chatting was about three hours but we requested the “longer” version in terms of explanations.
Our tour was completely free and we were able to sample some of the cigars. We made sure to bring some home for friends and family at a super reasonable price and Sylvin was generous enough to give us more to help fill the box and even packaged it to fly home.
Sylvin made sure that the cigar information was catered to what we wanted to learn about. Being history buffs we talked about the most important players in cigar history as well as how the tobacco plants came to be biologically categorized. The explanation was packed with facts, hilarious tidbits, movie quotes and many culturally relevant takes. I have not listened to a lecture that entertaining in a while.
We got to see different rolling techniques, leaf placement and stem removal real time. Got to smell some of the natural flavors for the smaller short leaf cigarillos flown in from all over the world. I especially enjoyed seeing the different brands under Zemis and their individual packaging and typeface (some of which is drawn by the owner himself as he is fluent in many languages).
If you are at all interested in cigars, a visit to Zemis is a must add to your itinerary.
