点评：We had some friends visiting from Germany who said they wanted to see Crossness pumping station, so I phoned to book a steaming day visit, the volunteer I spoke to was incredibly helpful in arranging this visit in advance
On the day, we arrived in the rain and rode the little train into the site, after a short walk we found ourselves in the main exhibition area. Seeing the enormous beam engine (Prince Consort) in steam was really something else. I expected it would be noisy in action, but it's really very quiet in operation, the massive beam tilting from side to side with huge piston rods attached. The volunteer guides are exceptional in their knowledge of the workings and history of the 4 great beam engines in the pumping hall, the decoration on the ironwork is stunning.
The exhibition celebrates the genius of the great SirJoseph Bazelguette and his engineering solutions for the Great Stink of 1856.
