点评:In August 2024 we returned from a fabulous two-week private safari in Tanzania, the most exhilarating, deeply satisfying tour we have ever taken. Safari Infinity, a locally owned company based in Arusha, was our travel provider. They created and flawlessly executed our marvelous itinerary, and we enthusiastically and wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone seeking a first-class safari experience.
There are so many options for taking an African safari that it is difficult to settle on locale and plan, or even the right season to travel. Our reading indicated that Tanzania offers the ideal geography and greatest breadth of wildlife of any region of Africa. We especially wanted to witness the Great Migration. We had extended phone interviews with several of the best-reviewed companies, and chose Safari Infinity mainly because we really hit it off with the company’s North American representative, Lisa Yamazaki. Having lived in Tanzania for years, Lisa is now based in Vancouver BC, but she travels back to Tanzania frequently to keep current in the travel industry. Her knowledge of the Tanzanian people, geography, wildlife–indeed everything pertaining safari travel–is exceptional. Planning our trip involved considerable back-and-forth over several weeks by both phone and email. Throughout Lisa was full of imaginative ideas, very open to discussing pros and cons, and unfailingly responsive.
Our safari had originally been booked for fall 2020, but with Covid hitting in March of that year, we had to cancel, which was a huge disappointment. By the time we cancelled, we had already paid in full. Lisa was very helpful in securing a 50% refund from the company, and in supporting our travel insurance claim, which reimbursed the remaining 50%. In 2023, when considering where to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary coming up the next year, we decided to follow through with our long-deferred plans for a safari. We immediately contacted Lisa, and were relieved to learn that Safari Infinity had survived the Covid years and that their business had picked up once again. We booked a revised version of our original itinerary, but several months later KLM announced the decision not to run the flight from Amsterdam to Arusha on a daily basis. As luck would have it, the one day of the week they dropped was the very day we had booked to fly to Arusha. We had to reconfigure the itinerary to arrive a day earlier–a rather harrowing prospect, since many camps and lodges were almost fully booked by that time. However, Lisa and Winnie, the office manager in Arusha, immediately went to work and had our safari rebooked within a day. We ended up with an even better itinerary than we had originally planned. All of this is to say that you are in very good hands working with Safari Infinity.
In a private safari, the qualifications and personality of the driver/guide could make or break the trip. Our guide, Thomson Malekia, was an ideal match for us. Thom is a seasoned safari guide, who knows his native country like the back of his hand, and he is an exceptionally capable, seemingly tireless driver. It should be mentioned that our vehicle was comfortable, well maintained, and thoroughly reliable in very rugged driving conditions. Trained in nature conservancy and having worked as a park ranger, Thom has an encyclopedic knowledge of wildlife, and he is gifted with amazingly keen eyesight. He could spot creatures in the distance that I could barely see through the maximum digital zoom of my camcorder. As a tracker, Thom has a sixth sense of where particular species are apt to be. We were treated to a phenomenal gathering of elephants at the river in the noon-day heat of Tarangire. In a throng of vehicles racing to view a river crossing by an immense herd of wildebeests, he obtained an exceptional vantage point for us overlooking the entire scene from which we could even exit the vehicle to capture shots. Thom was always eager to share his knowledge and opinions on Tanzanian history and culture, and he seemed genuinely curious about us as well. In the many hours we spent together, conversation never flagged. Throughout our two weeks together, Thom was unfailingly flexible and spontaneous, and very patient with two seniors interested in taking lengthy photo stops.
Since we prefer not to use small aircraft, ours was a driving itinerary that took us around the northern Tanzanian safari circuit. Our stays alternated between lodges and camps, which afforded enjoyable variety. We even stayed in a “migration camp” that switched locations in the Serengeti to follow the Great Migration. Each of the lodgings had a distinctive character, and we loved them all. The camps were consistently very comfortable (with indoor plumbing and hot showers), but it was still nice to follow a stay in a camp with lodge accommodations that were like a luxury hotel room. Whether camp or lodge, service was always very friendly and impeccable, and meals were consistently hygienically prepared and very delicious. (Having suffered gastric problems on trips to other areas of the globe, we did avoid uncooked foods, and we had no stomach issues whatsoever.)
Our itinerary alternated between one- and two-night stays at a particular site. When we stayed only one night, the next day would entail a full-day game drive to our next destination. On these days we would take a box lunch. Although we had read some negative reviews, we found them quite good. Some friends who had been on a safari speculated that we would tire of the routine over a two-week duration. On the contrary, for us each day was a joy, with beautiful scenery and fascinating encounters with animals and people. To be sure, being on safari requires patient waiting to achieve a particular objective. (It took an entire day and part of the next morning before we finally witnessed a river crossing of the Great Migration, but it was worth it!) The prospect of getting up before dawn each day might seem onerous, but in fact this was no trouble at all; the rewards of watching animals at daybreak are priceless. We managed to see the Big Five–a noteworthy achievement–but there was so much more. Among innumerable highlights (some already mentioned), we list just a few favorites: the coffee plantation in Arusha; the night game drive in Tarangire; rice and banana plantations in Mto Wa Mbu; the Hadzabe tribe near Lake Eyasi; the large lion family resting in the shade near a zebra carcass; the leopard moving about a kopje striking pose after pose for gawking admirers; the Maasai village; and on and on.
It may be hackneyed to describe a tour as a “trip of a lifetime.” For us, this safari was the pinnacle of our travel experiences, one we highly recommend to all who want to view animals in their native habitats and to take in the beauties of sub-Saharan Africa. A safari is a major investment, and it’s worth doing right. With Safari Infinity you will be assured a first-class experience.
