点评：Matoyianni Street (or Matogianni) is the Old Town’s famous pedestrian artery in Chora (Mykonos Town), known for luxury boutiques, traditional Greek goods, bars, and restaurants. It blends historic architecture with modern flair, attracting celebrities and tourists. It winds through the iconic whitewashed town. Its essence is the island’s glamorous hub for fashion and local crafts. It connects the old port to the core of Mykonos. The 33-square-mile island rises to 1,119 feet and has fewer than 11,000 residents.
The name Mykonos may have derived from Hesychius of Alexandria, who surmised that the name comes from the ancient Greek “Mykon,” which translates to “pile of stones” or “rocky place.” But most likely is from Stephanus of Byzantium, who tied it to the mythological hero Mykonos, son of Anius. The famous statue in Mykonos, depicted in the accompanying photo, is the Manto Mavrogenous Monument (or Statue of Manto Mavrogenous). Located in Manto Mavrogenous Square in Mykonos Town (Chora), it honors the heroic noblewoman who funded and fought in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.
Unfortunately, a ferry from Celestyal Discovery cruise ship brought us to the Old Port as the sun set. Shops were closed and night cafés had not yet opened. Few locals were out and our group seemed to be the only tourists in the unusually warm late November early evening. The guide said Mykonos was made famous by hippies and artists.
