Once a Hidden Gem, Now a Neglected Wreck – A Sad Day at Cochiti Golf Club

点评：I played Cochiti Golf Club yesterday with several friends who had fond memories of the course’s layout and setting from past rounds. All of them were excited to return, expecting the same scenic and enjoyable experience they remembered. What we found instead was a course in catastrophic decline—virtually unrecognizable from its former self.
The most glaring issue was the greens. Nearly every one had large patches—sometimes more than 50%—of complete dessication. What grass remained was uneven, bumpy, and borderline unplayable. While this past winter was certainly harsh—both cold and dry—there is little indication that the course is taking any meaningful steps to repair or restore the damage. Temporary greens or local rules could have at least acknowledged the conditions, but instead players are left to guess putt through cratered moonscapes.
The fairways, while not dead, looked like they hadn't been mowed in at least a week. Lies were inconsistent and scruffy, and the lack of definition between fairway and rough made for a frustrating experience. Speaking of the rough, it was thick, uneven, and completely unmanaged—making even short wedge shots nearly impossible from just a few steps off the fairway.
It’s worth emphasizing that this wasn’t just a bad day for the course—my playing partners, who have played Cochiti many times over the years, all agreed this was the worst shape they had ever seen it in. For me, it was unequivocally the worst-conditioned course I’ve ever played.
The bones of the layout are still there—it’s a great routing with engaging holes and beautiful views—but until management takes serious and visible action to restore basic playability, Cochiti Golf Club is no longer worth the drive or the green fee.
