点评:The Piazzoa Tasso sits at the centre of the town of Sorrento. If not at the exact geographic centre of this tourist town on the Sorrentine Peninsula south of Naples, then certainly close enough. It could however be considered the cultural and economic centre of Sorrento.
It is the start point for the Corso Italian, one of the main thoroughfares of the town that begins at its eastern edge. To the north down a steep cliff is the Marina Picollo one of the two harbours in the town and the terminus for the numerous ferries that ply the Bay of Naples.
South is the tree lined Viale Enrico Caruso, and to the east of this is the Sorrento train station the terminus for the commuter train that runs to Pompeii and Naples and a transit hub for local and regional buses. Finally, to the west lies the Via San Cesareo a pedestrian only street that is the heart of the Centro Storico a tourist zone of narrow streets full of shops and attractions.
The Piazza Tasso was named after the 16th Century poet Torqueto Tasso (1544-1595) who was born in Sorrento. A statue honouring him stands in the plaza off to the side. In the centre of the plaza stands another statue. This one dedicated to Sant Antonio or Antoninus of Sorrento the patron Saint of Sorrento. This is one of two statues to the Saint in the town, the other is in the centre of the nearby Piazza Sant’ Antonio.
On the north eastern edge of the plaza is the Santuario della Madonna del Carmine a 15th Century Church. West of this covering the northern edge is the narrow gorge that bisects the town and leads to the seaside and port. The Via Luigi de Maio winds through this as does a series of steep steps.
The rest of the Piazza is lined with several cafes and restaurants where one may grab a meal or just a drink and kill some time people watching. It should be noted that these for the most part cater to the crowds of tourists and are priced accordingly.
