点评:I’ve seen this castle from passing trains for years. I’m glad I finally made the time to get off and have a look. (It’s right next to Berkhamsted station and has free access any time.)
Ok, there are only a few bits of wall over a few feet high. But the grassy embankments are big and impressive. There are info boards, and you get a real sense of how the Normans conquered England a thousand years ago by building such huge fortresses on the motte-&-bailey model.
The motte (tall mound that would have had the main tower on it) was covered in wildflowers the day I visited. There are steps to the top and a good view.
I also enjoyed walking round the outer embankment. It overlooks the moat, which was lovely with ducks, geese, reeds and wild irises.
I was there about an hour in all.
