点评:Although we have travelled extensively this is the first time we felt moved to go on Tripadvisor and write a review as the experience is more than excellent.
The very friendly welcome was followed by a complementary coffee and a hugh piece of cake seved by a very polite young gentleman.
Pat, our tour guide actually lived in one of the houses in the village until 1984 which helped to bring the history to life. Our first stop was in the 'Shibin' where the diet of the early village was explained to us with opportunities to try some of its wares including seaweed and a drink of the illegally distilled Poitin which was very welcome. We also were 'invited' to an Irish wake experience where Pat explained the reason for the three day event and the origins of some well used phrases such 'snuffed it' and 'dead ringer'.
We then entered the house where Pat lived and he explained what life was like living in the village in a very interesting way. Following this we were sent off to explore the rest of the village on our own. Every room was filled with information boards which I would urge visitors to take the time to read as they are full of amazing details of the famine years, the history of Ireland, the trouble years and the peace process. These are accompanied by reconstruction models. If you decide to visit, plan at leadt 2 to 3 hours, we read everything and were in the museum for over 4 hours. At a cost of 16 euros, this was well worth it, considering the coffee and cake was included in the price.
Before you leave the carpark take time to visit the adjacent beach and if the tide is out take a walk along the golden sands.
