点评:We explored it in our 4x4 in mid-August as a part of a round trip of the Arkhon Pass, the Gizeldon Gorge, and the Karmadon Gorge. This roughly 180-kilometre loop may be easily covered in a reliable car in a day, especially if one leaves Vladikavkaz really early.
As to the Kurtat Gorge (aka the Fiagdon Gorge, albeit somewhat incorrectly), it turned out to be the undeniable highlight of our journey. Firstly, it's the most civilised section en route, boasting not only the imposing Fiagdon monastery and alike but also great restaurants and very decent hotels. Secondly, the road there is brand new and really takes one's breath away. And, last but not least, there are many opportunities to socialise with locals there—a treasure not so obvious in other quite lonely valleys.
Do try the Panorama restaurant of an eponymous hotel up there; we loved every minute of it!
Strongly recommended (in good weather, of course)!
(Try to tank your car to the hilt in Vladikavkaz; gas stations are pretty scarce in the mountains. Surprise, surprise...)
