点评：If you’ve never seen a blowhole before, put Nakalele Blowhole on your Maui itinerary.
It’s loud.
It’s dramatic.
And if the ocean is cooperating, you’ll actually feel the percussion of thousands of pounds of seawater being forced through ancient lava rock before exploding into the air. Standing nearby is a reminder that Mother Nature is always stronger than we are.
Best time to visit is high tide.
Is the Parking Fee Worth It?
This seems to be one of the biggest complaints online.
Yes, there is a parking fee if you use the designated lot.
Could you park along the road to avoid paying?
Technically, yes.
Would we recommend it?
No.
The road is narrow, winding, and visibility is limited. Personally, we’d rather support the local community than create another hazard along an already challenging road.
If the blowhole is your only stop, the fee may feel a little expensive.
However, if you’re planning to explore several attractions along the Kapalua Coast Road, we thought it was money well spent. The pass includes parking for multiple nearby locations, making it much less expensive than joining a guided tour.
Along the drive you’ll also find plenty of local food trucks serving shaved ice, banana bread, smoothies, hot dogs, and other Hawaiian treats.
Viewing the Blowhole
Here’s the good news…
If you simply want to enjoy the view, this is an incredibly easy stop.
From the parking area, it’s only about a 10-minute walk to the upper overlook, where you’ll have spectacular views of the blowhole, dramatic lava cliffs, and the Pacific Ocean crashing below.
For many visitors, this is all you’ll need.
Want to Get Closer?
Getting down to the blowhole is an entirely different experience.
You’ll be scrambling over uneven lava rock, loose volcanic gravel, sandy slopes, and sharp black lava.
This is not the place for flip-flops, Crocs, or smooth-soled shoes.
Wear hiking shoes or hiking sandals with excellent grip.
We’re experienced hikers, and one member of our family still slipped. Fortunately, it was only a few cuts and bruises, but sharp lava rock isn’t forgiving.
A Word About safety.
Please respect the ocean.
The warning signs aren’t there to make the attraction look dramatic.
They’re there because people have died here.
Never get too close to the blowhole.
The force of the water can be unpredictable, and as the water rushes back into the opening, it can create an incredibly dangerous suction effect.
We didn’t witness anything serious, thankfully.
What we did see were several tourists climbing onto the outermost lava rocks for social media photos.
Many had their backs turned to the ocean.
Anyone who spends time around the ocean knows one simple rule:
Never turn your back on the waves.
While we were there, one gentleman was surprised by a larger wave that completely drenched him. The force knocked him off balance, and he fell onto the lava rocks.
Thankfully, he wasn’t swept into the ocean.
It could have ended very differently.
Families With Young Children
If you’re hiking down to the lower viewing area, I’d also recommend not carrying young children in backpack carriers.
Backpacks change your center of gravity, and the combination of loose sand, jagged lava, and uneven footing makes balance much more challenging.
Older children who can walk independently generally have a great time exploring—as long as they’re closely supervised and understand that this is not a playground.
Our Family’s Take
Nakalele Blowhole isn’t a destination where you’ll spend half a day.
It’s a relatively short stop.
But it’s one you’ll remember.
Standing close enough to hear the roar, feel the sea spray on your face, and experience the incredible force of the Pacific Ocean pushing through solid lava is something photos simply can’t capture.
Come prepared.
Wear good shoes.
Respect the ocean.
Then sit back, get a little wet…or completely soaked if the wind shifts…and enjoy one of Maui’s most impressive natural wonders.
