If you're looking for a true adventure into one of the most remote and spectacular parts of Iceland, then book the Svalvogar Circle Tour with Iceland Backcountry Travel. It was without question the highlight of our cruise around Iceland.
Our guide, Guðmundur ("Gummi"), was outstanding. His knowledge of the Westfjords, his storytelling, and especially his driving skills made the day unforgettable. You immediately feel that you're exploring the area with someone who has spent a lifetime here.
The scenery was simply breathtaking. We drove through the beautiful Dýrafjörður, visited the historic village of Þingeyri, passed abandoned farms, crossed mountain passes, and enjoyed incredible views of the rugged Westfjord Alps.
The real adventure began on the legendary Svalvogar Road. The narrow road follows the dramatic coastline between steep mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views around every corner. Driving on the loose gravel added a sense of adventure, but at all times Gummi demonstrated complete confidence and professionalism. It was clear that we were in the hands of an experienced local guide, allowing us to focus on enjoying one of the most beautiful drives we have ever experienced.
One of the most memorable stops was down on a remote beach. There were no handrails, no marked trails, and no tourist facilities—just raw Icelandic nature. We carefully made our way along the cliffs toward the ocean side, where we could look directly up at nesting seabirds on the cliff faces. It felt like discovering a hidden corner of Iceland that very few visitors ever experience.
Later in the day we stopped at a small café in the middle of nowhere. We had a wonderful conversation with the owner, who told us she could not remember ever having spoken with Danish visitors before.
Then came the journey back.
The mountain road had only reopened in early June after the winter closure. Gummi explained that during winter the snow can reach many metres in places, and it takes months before the road can be cleared.
Most people would probably take the winding road back.
Not Gummi.
Instead, he smiled and took what he called the shortcut—straight over the mountain. The specially built Ford Excursion climbed effortlessly up the steep terrain while we were pressed back into our seats. It was an off-road experience unlike anything we had ever tried.
As if that wasn't enough, we drove to a spectacular viewpoint just as an intense storm swept across the mountain. The wind was so strong that it lifted the windshield wipers off the glass and threw mud and small stones against the vehicle. Even Gummi looked surprised and exclaimed, "Holy moly!", saying it was the strongest wind he had ever experienced there.
Turning the vehicle around on the tiny mountaintop was another unforgettable moment. It felt as though the rear wheels were almost hanging over the edge. Gummi laughed and explained his simple rule:
"When I can see the church in Þingeyri in my rear-view mirror, I know I'm far enough back to turn."
Seconds later he calmly turned the large Ford around as if it were the easiest thing in the world.
This wasn't just another excursion.
It was an adventure full of breathtaking scenery, unforgettable moments, genuine local hospitality, and experiences that most visitors to Iceland will never have.
