点评:The road from Motovun to Buzet was fairly straight forward but then we had to turn off near Roc and follow a very twisty, windy, narrow road towards Hum. Did I mention that we were also following two school buses?
At one point I just yelled “stop”!!! I had noticed a field filled with roadside sculptures. I recall reading about this minor road that was known as known as the Glagolitic Alley.
The archaic Slavonic script known as the Glagolitic alphabet, was used by Istrian priests right up until the 19th century. The origins of Glagolitic go back to 9th century monks Cyril and Methodius who developed this alphabet that was better suited to the sounds of the Slavic language.
Although the use of Glagolitic has been gradually “phased out” to be replaced by the Roman alphabet, it still has enormous symbolic significance.
Croatians still recognize it as an integral and unique part of their cultural heritage. I later read that the sculptures were placed here in the early 1980 in celebration of the Glagolitic alphabet.
