Best beach in Mid Wales - but don't tell everyone!

点评：I'm cautious to write a review because I don't want to tell everyone about it! Its lovely just how it is. Tywyn has a large sandy beach - at the mid-point of Cardigan Bay. The Victorian promenade and shelter were built for a tourism boom that never quite materialised. Tywyn remained a small town, not growing to the size of Barmouth and Aberystwyth as investors hoped.
The name itself means sand dunes. To the south, four miles of sandy beach with dunes behind stretch to Aberdyfi (Aberdovey). About a mile south of Tywyn is a fossil forest on the beach - trees preserved after they were flooded at the end of the ice age. Legends have grown up about these and a sunken kingdom beneath the sea. There are almost always some tree trunks showing, but after stormy weather, much more dramatic root structures are exposed.
Going north, the sand gives way to more rock pools, and if you keep going you get to where the river Dysynni joins Cardigan bay. This is an excellent bird watching spot. Its common to see waders like redshank, oystercatcher and Curlew. It is also the most southerly point for breeding Eider. Chough have been nesting on beacon hill opposite.
In terms of amenities - most of the town of Tywyn is half a mile inland - with a useful range of shops and cafes for both visitors and residents. On the seafront itself there is an ice cream shop, pub, teashop and convenience shop. The teashop is in a charming old farm building. set back from the seafront is a leisure park with putting, tennis, crazy golf and other beach games. There are also public toilets here - which are open year round. If you want to look before you visit - check out the webcam.
