Honouring the Sacrifices of WWI
National War Memorial, Adelaide的点评
点评:The National War Memorial is the largest and most prominent of the many sculptures monuments along North Terrace.
Created in Adelaide in 1931, it honours the South Australians who fought and died in WWI.
We paused here, partly to properly acknowledge it but also because its very moving. Rather than walking past, it pays to stop and walk right around the monument because it is two-sided.
What you see here is a large solid looking arch made of hefty granite blocks. In the centre, is a white marble figure with enormous folded wings - This is the Winged Spirit of Duty. The figure at the front, holds a crucifix-like Crusader sword and towers over the small figures below like a giant guardian angel.
The three bronze figures are answering the call to duty. They represent a cross-section of people from the time - a farmer, a student and a young girl.
Now, walk around the back and you will see a similar image but this time the Winged Spirit is a female. In this version, her sword is sheathed and she holds a laurel wreath and supports the body of a naked, dying man on her left arm. Below her is a small pool or fountain. The imagery of cleansing and compassion is heavy here.
A doorway on the side leads to a crypt or shrine where the names of those who died are recorded.
GETTING HERE: If you are strolling down North Terrace, the memorial is in between the Matthew Flinders Memorial and the State Library, on the corner of Kintore Avenue and North Terrace.
