One of the oldest monuments in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. If not the oldest.
Monument Vytusu Bering的点评
点评:It was inaugurated in 1826, and its correct name is the Monument to Vitus Bering.
I climbed the staircase that saw better times up to the small platform where the column was situated in early September.
The monument is simple, solemn, and stately. It accurately conveys the spirit of the seafarer to whom it's dedicated, I believe.
Vitus Jonassen Bering (1681-1741) was a Danish-born Russian explorer and cartographer who led Russian expeditions that traversed the Kamchatka Peninsula, discovered Alaska, and uncovered the islands not far from Kamchatka that turned out to be his final resting place and were subsequently named in his honour—the Commander Islands (Bering held the rank of captain-commodore).
That guy also founded Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in 1740. Hence the monument.
Recommended, albeit mostly to buffs of Russian history.
