点评:t has been many years since we took the kids up to the BINDER TWINE FESTIVAL the weekend after school started ...(BOOOOOO!!!!!)
It was a great Saturday (when it didn't rain....) starting with a DEEELISHUUUSSSS peameal and egg sandwich....covered in WASPS!!!!! and a stroll down Islington Avenue looking at some unique crafts and back in the early days actually buying stuff which we are now donating to VALUE VILLAGE!!!!!!
On occasion we would see Pierre Burton and his wife in period costumes walking up and down as many of the Kleinburgers did for the festival.....he....covertly glancing out of the side of his eyes seeing if anybody recognized him.......
Now, sadly, the drive north on Hwy 27 (don't even mention the 427...) is no longer a drive in the country but rather continuous urban sprawl. The historic BINDER TWINE FESTIVAL is no more after 2020 due to the increasing costs, decline in volunteers...and the final decisive blow....COVID. The once isolated town has been gentrified with mega-mansions up to its front doorstep and the town now has a STOP SIGN in the middle to quell the continuous traffic.
HOWEVER.....................having just been there this past week .....there are some bastions of interest which I would highly recommend your time in a trip to this little village. My surprising HAPPY FOOD PLACE "find" was the COOKIE CRUMBLE CAFE. Although it seems to serve ice cream (good KAWARTHA LAKES) this is also a small restaurant with terrific food. Be prepared to wait as it is very popular. There is also homemade baking available as well. Lots of room on the patio in good weather.
But my initial purpose was to see the TOM THOMPSON exhibit, TRUE NORTH, at THE McMICHAEL GALLERY. This gallery is still hidden far off the road and away from the hustle and noise of the encroaching urban plague.
A beautiful architectural building which melts into the surrounding forest. A massive collection of Canadian artworks but if you want to focus on the Tom Thompson exhibit....stay to the RIGHT. popular but somewhat pricey restaurant on the main floor serves delicious food.
Treat yourself to a drive....but I would suggest NOT on a weekend................................
