点评:A fascinating place with many layers of history, now carefully re-invented and curated as a museum to the Entente Cordiale. Most people have heard of the Entente Cordiale even if they don't know exactly what it is!* The present building was built on the remains of an early medieval building in around 1865 by Captain Henry Guy, the site having previously been bought by another Englishman, Sir John Hare, who had used it as an archaeological dig. Guy and his family lived here for 32 years, in this rather eccentric neo-Tudor mansion. In 1897 yet another Englishman bought it, John Whitley, an industrialist from Leeds. He saw it as part of the new holiday resort of Hardelot-Plage that he was developing. His firm had invented lineoleum, and another of his products, lincrust, forms the decoration of the grand staircase. The last interesting owner was a protege of Whitley's, the Abbe Bouly, a suitably eccentric priest who was also a water diviner, diagnoser of diseases and healer; his room of curiosities at the top of the house is particularly interesting. Eventually it passed to the local authority and finally the Departement of Pas De Calais renovated it and opened it to the public in its new role in 2014, which explains the freshness of all the decorations and furnishings. Each room is filled with artefacts, documents and pictures from different eras showing the ever-changing relationshuip of the French and the British, from Joan of Arc to Queen Elizabeth II (It was completed before Brexit!). Jolly good visit.

* 英法两国于1904年签署了《英法协议》;自此以后,我们一直是亲密的盟友。
