点评:Guided Dive where I was the only customer. It is one of the great privileges of my life to have met Elvis. Watching this massive fish interact with Ruben is amongst the most beautiful things I have ever seen. There is obvious great friendship between the two of them. I have never seen a fish want to cuddle before. It was genuinely life changing, before I even got to say hello. This took place at 27M, so would be classed as an Advanced Dive, but Garajau Nature Reserve has much to offer and other Meros. Ask if this is important to you. Their email communication prior to the dive was outstanding.
My equipment had been set up for me but they told me to check it, and they watched me do it. I was offered a choice of a 10L or a 12L steel tank. There was a thorough briefing about the navigation plan plus a backup if conditions weren’t optimum – but visibility was great, despite the recent big waves and “Coastal Event” weather.
Luiz accompanied Ruben and I on our descent and was of great assistance with my weights, which were accommodated in pockets in my BCD, rather than a belt, which was a nice feature. It may depend on how much weight you need, whether or not this is possible, but I have not previously had this option. I think it illustrates their customer focus. They go out of their way to make the dive as comfortable as possible. They also saved my camera. During our discussion prior to the dive, Ruben had the forethought to ask what depth my camera would withstand. Despite him telling me the plan, it hadn’t occurred to me that we were going beyond my camera’s tolerance. Ruben took beautiful videos and photos throughout the dive on my behalf, so that I could share it with my family. It probably goes without saying that his shots are better than mine would have been.
Ruben has a relaxed swimming speed, and it was nice to really slow down and take in the stunning scenery, observing numerous shoals of fish including a large group of barracudas. There were also breams, wrasse, parrotfish—too many to list. I have studied Fish Identification, and there were so many types of fish, I haven’t even figured out what all of them were yet. There were many electric yellow sponges on the rocks and beautiful magenta plants. Ruben also took me to a gorgeous area that was like a tunnel, but filled with shafts of light. It was very exciting to be in an overhead environment. I suspect that he specifically did this because I mentioned caves prior to the dive. He took me to find a Black Moray Eel, after I mentioned I had seen him on their social media. We were underwater for just under an hour and the dive was glorious.
For the exit, Ruben put himself between me and the waves. It was not the most dignified exit, looking back at my husband’s video evidence, but honestly, from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate him prioritizing my safety. He then helped me up the stony beach which was quite unstable underfoot. He still had a tank on, but he had assisted me out of my gear in the shallows, and Luis kindly carried it back to the dive centre for me. I’d done beach entries before, but a long time ago, and on sand. Walking on the pebbles was tough due to the movement.
Back at the dive centre, there is an outdoor shower with hot water on the porch and there is a private changing booth inside the cave. Ruben took the time to show me some of his camera footage and transfer the files to my phone. He also stamped my paper logbook and even gave me stickers. (PADI divers, bring your paper logbook, as this is an SSI centre. If you like, you can use the App later on, to log this as a recreational dive.) I was able to chat easily with him about technique mistakes I pointed out, where I knew I could have done better. Ruben is a natural teacher and was very reassuring.
People with a small physique will be happy to know that they had an XS wetsuit. Not all dive centers have them. Water temperature was 20C and I did not feel cold. They also had size EU36/ USA6/ UK3 boots and fins.
I wish for Mero Dive Center’s sake that they have more customers in future, but what an incredible bit of luck to have such a stunning one-on-one dive. They even honored the original price I was quoted several months ago. I enjoyed all of the diving I have done in Madeira, but it’s a total no-brainer. If you have time for just one dive, come to Garajau Marine Reserve and do it with Mero Diving Centre. The Groupers know them personally. I still feel euphoric thinking about it.
他们还有 EU36/USA6/UK3 尺寸的靴子和脚蹼。
