Rio Grande del Norte National Monument的点评
点评：The Rio Grande del Norte National Monument is a variety of many different experiences. The bridge on Highway 64 just north of Taos is one part. I drove over it unaware and could not believe my eyes! So worth a stop. It's simply stunning.
Secondly, just out of Questa, NM and about an hour from the adorable Red River ski and summer resort town, there is a visitor center with campgrounds and many, many trails, some very challenging and some easier. The two gorges of the Red River and the Rio Grande converge at the La Junta point. You can see it from the overlook but if you're a hiker, you can hike down to the confluence. If you hike down to the rivers, be aware you are going straight down and then up a gorge. The elevations are around 740-840 feet. Use poles, have appropriate footwear, a hat and lots of water.
Our latest hike was the Little Arsenic to the River Trail to the La Junta point where you can see the rivers and the gorges become one. Beautiful rushing water, birds singing, ponderosa pines, pinon trees, chamisa and flowers are still blooming even in September. There are shelters and primitive toilets where you can catch your breath. Many fish here as well in the cold, clear water.
Luckily, they held a Star Party while we were there, and I hope they get the Dark Skies designation they are going for. It was extremely informative and seeing the actual Milky Way and so many stars was a wonderful experience. Local amateur astrologists brought their telescopes so we could see stars and even the planet Saturn.
The campsites do not have hook-ups, however, there is water and bathrooms available.
