A Road Trip to Pachmarhi: the worries and the memories

点评：Having graduated from a compact car to a SUV I was keen to undertake some long road trips from Nagpur. However, not being an adventure sort I was worried about driving in "mountainous" Satpura hills into third month with my new SUV. To alley my fears I talked to some "not-so-adventurous" drivers to the Pachmarhi hill station. Gathered that the drive to the hill station is anything but dangerous.
So, on a recent weekend I started the 300 km journey at morning and found the road well laid out all along especially in the Chhindwara-Pipariya-Matkuli-Pachmarhi section. Although the trees have shed their leaves but the sight was an enjoyable one. At the last leg of the journey as I reached Pachmarhi (after a 7hr journey with short meal-break) I got a feel of the height but nothing of the sort I dreaded.
Although, thought to visit nearby places in the afternoon but felt bit tired after the long drive and also due to a short-sleep the previous night. So, took a long nap and as I got up in the evening we took a walk to "Pancharanya": haat-bazaar, a facility maintained by an agency on behalf of MP Tourism. I found the visit quite refreshing with local talents rendering beautiful folk songs and staging hilarious drama.
The next day(2nd day at Pachmarhi) I visited Bison Lodge to book gypsy for visit to some water-falls in the forest area. Although, gypsies are booked here at one counter apparently managed by local gypsy operators, from another counter manned by forest(govt) officials one needs to take permission for visit to the forest area. While the gypsy charged Rs.2000 for the day(9-6/7pm) ; the forest permission for 4 pax with a guide cost me another Rs. 1120/-. Once this is done the gypsywala tells you to select any of the routes from 1-5 in the list published by "Pachmarhi Taxi Malik Evam chalak Kalyaan Sangh". The catch here is you have to give up one or the other attractive location. We choose Route 3 primarily for Bee Falls: a beautiful water fall where we enjoyed free fish pedicure 😀
To break the secrecy; the stream here has countless fishes who nibble on your feet if you stand still.
The dampener: the walk down and up the fall is very tiring. We skipped taking bath here as negotiating through the slippery rocks till the water streams hits you seemed too dangerous for the fun. The visit to Bee falls was of 2-3 hrs. The trivia: If you listen to nature here,it would seem a thousand bees humming together; so goes the name.
Our next visit of the day was after lunch( we started late i.e. at 11:45 am instead of 9/930am, so missed a few hours of fun) and to Reechgarh caves or Bear Caves. The walk here is comparatively easier and short(10 min)but the sight is beautiful with high rocky walls rising around you. A 30-45 minute stay here is enough to enjoy the beauty.
Then we headed to Dhoopgarh point: the highest peak in Madhyapradesh-CG. With the ride through the green forest we entered the zone before the deadline of 5:30pm and stayed till the sun set. There is a small museum housing some photographic delights of Pachmarhi.
With this our visit to the guided forest-entry gypsy ride was over as the gypsy dropped us to our accommodation.
A trivia: All water falls come under the forest area( so needs a guide and booking from MP Tourism Bison lodge or online with manual certification from Bison lodge).
Third day: Although all the places we visited this day are non-forest areas, you may take your own vehicle. However, I preferred to hire a gypsy(Rs.1500) for the day to take us to Jata shanker, Buddhist (Pandav) Cave, Handi Kho, Priyadarshini,Gupt Mahadev, Mahadev,Green Valley, Jheel and Rajendragiri. As we are history enthusiasts, so took an additional site for an extra Rs.600/- to visit a Rock Painting site(Madadevi Rock paintings) which is a more than 10000 year old wonder.On the way we saw the dilapidated yet majestic begum mahal.
To a befitting end to our beautiful experience at Pachmarhi, we had our dinner at "Beta Bawarchi" with soulful live music.
On our Pachmarhi visit I would summarise that it turned out to be more exciting than I imagined. Pachmarhi has history, nature, culinary and artistic magic to keep you enthralled for at least some days.
So, you may head to this destination next and create some beautiful memories.
To top it, if you are coming back through Matkuli then on your way towards Chhindwara/Nagpur there is a place called Satdhara on Denwa river where you may take a short stop and have a bath in clean river water on its cascade.
