A thoroughly enjoyable visit

点评：As a supporter of Piet Oudolf I have long wanted to visit this garden. And finally I was near enough to make it possible. I do not drive, so it’s good to know that it’s a short walk from Bruton train station. It’s also well-signed and safe, as the path runs parallel to the busy local road. At the end of the path, you walk through the allotments which unsurprisingly was a bit muddy.
I visited the bookshop, the gallery and the garden. Really enjoyed all three. The contemporary, conceptual art isn’t for everyone but I enjoyed it. Especially the Georg Wilson room.
Having seen the garden in photos, videos and film I had an idea of what to expect, even so it was completely different being there in person. And as it was a cold February day, there were very few visitors, and most plants were dormant so it was mostly me, the gardeners and the song birds. The garden packs a lot into a relatively small space, including an egg-like pavilion (which was surprisingly beautiful inside), two ponds, a number of planting beds and was punctuated by a series of very large sculptures.
Oudolf chooses plants that have ‘a good death’, in other words they look attractive well after blooming. This garden isn’t for everyone. There’s nothing traditional about it and the locals that I know don’t have many good things to say about it (or the village itself as it’s a local anomaly). However I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the gallery and garden (all of which is fully wheelchair and buggy friendly) and I will be back when the garden wakes up.
For those who use public transport, it’s an easy walk into the village from H+W. I can recommend At The Chapel.
