We visited during the autumn foliage season and were absolutely overwhelmed by the vastness of nature stretching endlessly before us. The colors were unlike those back home in Japan—the shades of brown were especially stunning!
The sheer number of churches also spoke to the depth of local faith. Our guide, Gigi, was incredibly kind and thoughtful throughout the trip. The car was spotless and comfortable, which made the long drives so much easier.
We spent three full days together, and even with our rather selfish request to be dropped off at our destination hotel while sightseeing along the way, Gigi made it all possible and enjoyable. The UNESCO World Heritage churches in Romania felt untouched by mass tourism, and thanks to Gigi’s connections, we were even able to enter some locked churches after he arranged access for us. That was such a special experience—thank you!
Even though our English isn’t strong, Gigi explained everything clearly and patiently. He also took care of us with restroom breaks and great lunch stops. Because of him, we felt safe, relaxed, and truly enjoyed every moment.
Beyond the breathtaking churches, we were deeply moved by the pastoral scenery of Maramureș—especially those moments when our car would pass by horse-drawn carriages.
