点评:We first spotted the large residential complex designed by Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser from the viewing platform of the Wedding Tower on the Mathildenhöhe. Having visited the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna (1985), we were eager to have a closer look at this much less famous project. The Waldspirale (literally “Forest Spiral”) was built between 1998 and 2000 and is composed of 105 flats with over 1000, all different, windows. The first tenants moved in just a few months after Hundertwasser’s demise. The U-shaped, undulating concrete building spirals around a green courtyard featuring a playground and an artificial lake. It climbs gradually to nine floors and culminates at twelve floors in a 41-meter-high tower with a gilded onion dome. The colour scheme in soft earth and pink tones is more subdued than that of the Hundertwasserhaus, but it is still very unusual for an apartment block. The undulating façade reminds of layers of sediment. Hundertwasser stayed true to principles, like the rejection of straight lines and sharp edges, the use of colourful tiles and ceramic columns, and the integration of nature into the building. The roofs of the Waldspirale are covered in vegetation, and trees are literally growing out of some windows. We absolutely loved it and only regretted we couldn’t have a peek inside.
