Fagatele Bay Trail的点评
点评：This place is a little hard to find. I used a guidebook (the extremely helpful “Explore American Samoa” by Melinda Clayville), the directions from John’s 2016 review below, and a map marked by the National Park of American Samoa to navigate. From the main road, you turn at the village of Futiga on a small road marked by a sign that points to the Marine Sanctuary at Fagatele Bay. The sign is easy to miss. Follow the road per John’s review to the parking below. The family who owns the property where you park is very friendly, and we didn’t see any dogs. It’s $5 per person to park, which is completely reasonable for the use of private property.
The trail is relatively wide, flat, and easy until you start your descent through the rainforest to the beach. That part of the walk is steep and was dry the day we did it, but I can see how it would get quite slippery. When you near the water there are ropes to handholds and finally stairs to the bottom, where you immediately walk on to a gorgeous beach straight out of a movie scene.
We were there at low tide and were able to snorkel in the shallows, though you must be careful. There is so much gorgeous live coral and you should try not to touch it at all. I imagine if you cleared the first reef the snorkeling would be even more amazing further out, but there were intense currents while we were there and we were the only people in that area. As first time visitors, we exercised caution and stayed in the more shallow areas. We saw tons of beautiful fish. I will add some poor-quality photos that are just pictures of my camera screen to this post as examples.
This was one of my favorite activities on the island and a must-do despite the challenge of getting there.
