Well preserved farm from a time of utopian communes that is a great day trip.
Germantown Colony Museum的点评
点评:Rural museums offer us a chance to see how many of our ancestors lived and worked. Germantown was a utopian village of fairly well-off people whose heirs still live around the area. The museum has preserved many books, tools, furniture, clothing and a lot of the things they considered essential are well-preserved for viewing in the settings in which they were originally used. It's a beautiful area, with a sweeping view of the countryside and the fields where they once raised animals, food and cotton. There is an old cane juice extractor that was turned by oxen, mules or horses (sometimes called a "trapiche"), a well-preserved barn with a wagon and all kinds of farm equipment. I especially enjoyed seeing a woman's side saddle and gardening and farming tools.
Catharine Poole, the state's tourism information counselor who works at the Museum, is knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. There are several buildings and a museum with a large porch and rocking chairs that overlook the back of the property that slopes down to what was likely the old cotton field. My friend and I both enjoyed a day trip from Shreveport and the Germantown Colony Museum was easily accessible and well worth the short drive out of Minden.
